Re: A7r4 pixel shift. Rather a resolution eye-opener

Well, my A7Rm4 arrived and I am shooting with it. My intent was to improve the workflow for my high resolution images of Lincoln Cent varieties. With my HRT2i, I must stitch a 2x3 panorama to end up with a ~9400x9400 final image. Each tile is done at ~2x with the 95mm Printing-Nikkor, shooting in RA...

B&L 15x Ultra Wide Field Oculars

I have several pairs of these I'd like to sell. Some are branded FJW. Pricing from $125-$200 per pair depending on condition. Main condition issues are cleaning marks on top lens surface but I have pairs with minimal or no marks. 23.2mm barrels.

Re: A7r4 pixel shift. Rather a resolution eye-opener

Must be micro usb as there's no USB-C on A7rii, the first body I used it with. Not there to look, sorry. The IR remote method is better IMO as it leaves the usb port free for power and tethering. I'm using an older mjkzz controller with hardwired triggering, so am hoping the second USB is set up fo...

Re: A7r4 pixel shift. Rather a resolution eye-opener

How do you trigger the shutter release on the A7Rm4? The WeMacro rail controller fires it - either wired, or via IR remote. It has both Micro-USB and USB-C. Which one does the triggering? Reason I ask is that I'm finally getting one (again) and want to make sure I have the right cable, and that it'...

Re: Need a permanent setup!

Looks like you build these? I'll post this because it's Ray's. How do you attach your column to the platform? The column is held to the base with a long bolt through the center of the column extrusion. I find this is by far the best way to attach these extrusions and results in complete rigidity, u...

Re: Need a permanent setup!

Hi @Netdewt, Welcome to the forum! Lots of great info and people on here to help. Im curious about your decision to go with a platform. Your spheres, like my coins, would seem to benefit from having gravity and friction holding them in place rather than suspending them on a vertical stage. Based on ...

Re: Highest Serial Number 105PN?

Anyway I never thought I'd be writing about this problem on this forum....but when Ray asked his interesting question, I couldn't resist mentioning that there was a way to answer it IF we had a liist of serial numbers from randomly sampled lenses. Ray correctly observed that in this case, we don't ...

Re: Highest Serial Number 105PN?

Here are some other interesting thing that seems un-knowable but which can be calculated: Nikon has made x different lens models throughout its history, and we don't know x. If eBay listings can be considered as a random sample of the population of Nikon lenses in the world, then we can figure out ...

Re: Highest Serial Number 105PN?

However, seeing this list, it is definitely not a random sample. It has huge gaps, but the sample from 153-467 is remarkably complete. This strongly suggests that Nikon did not always use successive serial numbers, and for some reason the later numbers are comparatively poorly sampled. If Nikon was...

Re: Highest Serial Number 105PN?

It's often surprising how much we can know from sparse data sets. This is mathematically the same problem as estimating the age of a plant trait given the age of the oldest recovered fossil showing that trait. This is an important problem, because we need such estimates in order to calibrate phylog...

If all we know are these two datapoints, the unbiased estimate of the highest existing serial number is 501761. With more samples, this estimate could be improved.
I'm all for using statistics appropriately, but I don't agree with such analysis in this case.

Re: lighting & setup questions

John, welcome to the forum! I'm a vertical system / continuous lighting guy, so I thought I'd chime in.... I use a vertical system so that I can take advantage of gravity and friction to hold my specimens, usually coins, in place. If your subjects also can be shot while on a flat horizontal surface,...
