thank you John, nice work! any idea if this weevil is native australian? or transplanted/imported? Thanks for looking Carmen. The only info I have found so far is: "Several species of Sitona are important agricultural pests of legumes, especially in its native regions and introduced populations in ...

John Super cool!! Hey, how about shooting a "jumper" ant? (JackJumper??? What is the name of it?) I hear they are really bad insects and pack a powerful bite. Your result is amazing! Mike Thank you for your comments Mike. I want to find a really big Ant and shoot the individual part if I can but it...

That is a spectacular image John. I am surprised it only took 88 frames at 10x. I recently gave 10x a try and after 1,100 images for three stacks (400, 400, 300 images). And they all suck. Unfortunately it takes 7 hours to convert, align, and stack any one set before knowing how much the final imag...

Pea and Bean Weevil re-shoot

I was having some confusion over the finished size of the stacked subject and Rik kindly shed some light on the subject for me. Rik suggested that next time I did a stack, I should shoot one frame stopped down to compare the size of the subject in both photos. This stack is 453 images at 0.0153mm in...

Okay Rik, I understand what you are saying now. Looking at the Weevil with the naked eye, it does look long and skinny in the flesh but the stack has made it look deeper in the vertical axis, but I guess that is because the subject is only 10mm in front of the objective. I will try a single exposure...

Thanks for you explanations Rik. I would imaging it is perspective foreshortening as you described and I have attached the original image after processing before I shrunk the height to give it a more "normal" appearance. I shrunk the subject in height to occupy the red area. http://jgknight.smugmug....

Pea and Bean Weevil

Tried another stack of 250 images, increments of 0.012mm on a Weevil. One thing I have noticed when stacking is the subject seems to get "fatter" as the stack progresses. Does anyone have a "cure" for that? I guess it might be because of the close proximity of lens to subject that distortion occurs....

Re: Very Small Fly

Nicely shot! Interesting thing I learned yesterday that the mouth has no chewing parts, it is only used for drinking liquids. This feature is very common among flies. For a closer view of the structure, see HERE and the follow-up HERE . Quite possibly your fly does not have the "teeth" shown in tho...

Very Small Fly

Tiny Female Fly 3.5mm body length I found this very tiny fly last evening. It was very slow in its movements and was probably on its last legs. (Is a fly that cannot fly, called a walk?) Interesting thing I learned yesterday that the mouth has no chewing parts, it is only used for drinking liquids. ...

Fine picture, John. :) The micrometer head is pulling the stage? What's the vernier part doing? Thanks for asking Chris. I don't really need the vernier for the stack, but it does come in handy for starting and finishing the stack. It can be set to zero to get a fairly accurate depth in mm of the f...

Truly excellent picture, John. This one look less 'hot/blown out' than the previous posted ant and uses good diiffusion. Any additional info on the "10:1 N.A.0,30 from Germany" ? Thank you Fred. I took note when you mentioned about the blown out part and decided to try to fix it. The lighting consi...

Meat Ant (Iridomyrmex sp) 10x magnification

Further to my recent image of this ant, here it is again but this time 10x mag of the mandible region only. I have made modifications to the lighting set-yo to even out the hot spots as best I can with limited resources. Canon 5D Mk2 - 10:1/0.03 objective http://jgknight.smugmug.com/Extreme-Macros/i...
