I wonder (I have never seen a specimen) if that is the disputed var. semiradiata, v. rare in Britain and characterised by 'distinct spines' at each angle of the lobule.

Certainly the specimens I would assign to M. truncata here rarely have such developed lobular spines. I have not yet obtained a camera, but the following, from the Western Isles, are Scottish forms:

Or is it the effect of DIC?

I'd also like a 'shufti' at the same cell emptied of its contents.

Thanks for the comments.
I did some more checking and it looks like its.
Micrasterias truncata var semiradiata - a fresh water desmid.
It definitely has distinct spines.

Im no expert, just Sumguy how likes to look at cool things under a microscope :D
