...but the proboscis presented itself quite nicely (for a change). Shot in APS-C crop mode with a 10x Mitty on a 105mm Pentax (5.25x on sensor). The second image is just a crop from the first with slightly different exposure adjustments.

Not so sure! This fly looks like the type that has distinct grooves on the setae (those stout bristles). I can see some vague grooves on some broken setae.
I am certain there are similar images on MPG that show these grooves clearly - could not find the imaqe(s).
I would have thought a 10x Mitty would be 'sharper'; perhaps reducing it to 5x resulted in lost resolution.
