What are objective nose caps used for?

Post by enricosavazzi »

Olympus (and likely other makers of microscope objectives) make caps with a thin optically flat glass cover at the end, meant to be mounted at the front of microscope objectives.

Is the purpose of these caps to replace a cover glass, allowing a dry objective designed for 0.17 mm cover glass to be used e.g. for water dipping, or are there other uses?

Any literature references on these and similar objective caps?

PS - the only cap I can find mentioned in web searches of Olympus documentation is the XL-CAP for the low-power UV objectives, but I have seen others on eBay. The XL-CAP is very long and clearly for water dipping (it provides an extended air chamber in front of the objective), while the others I have seen are much flatter and their front window seems to fit right in front of the entrance element of the objective. Examples on eBay: 181564363315, 181564363310.
