Insects are back .. at last

Post by Yawns »

Still pretty cold here with temperatures ranging from 6ºC to 14ºC, but I am finding insects since the last days of January ...

Doing mainly studio shots with the creatures I can capture around my place... only because I don't have enough hours of light to do it in the field.. sunrise is around 7 AM and sunset around 6.30 PM... but I have a full job.

some of the pictures bellow are studio, some are field shots...

This eason I abandoned the Photoshop subscription... I'm just editing / adjusting the *.NEF (Nikon's RAW) with Capture NX-D, the software provided by Nikon .. In my opinion is much better than Adobe Camera Raw for the purpose.

Nephrotoma sp. - Tipulidade
(Studio)

Cicindela maroccana - Carabidae
(Sudio) - I'm needing to edit again.. sharpness in excess.

Spilostethus pandurus - Lygaeidae
Field - after sunset

Pieris brassicae - Pieridae
field - just "reborn"...

Sphaerophoria sp (female) - Syrphidae
field - after sunset

very simple "setup" - Tokina 100, Meike Ring flash, diffuser - card & "Dracalon" ( a synthetic fiber used to pad bed linen and clothes)

avergae settings:
high iso - 400 to 640, usually
f/9 to f/16 (it's Nikon, it's effective)
speed 1/160
Flash iTTL +1 compensation (in most cases)
Camera seetings - custom
Contrast, Saturation, Hue, Sharpness all at mimimum
White ballance "Auto" or 5500 Kelvin..

Great images, love the detail...strange that I have a much different view of insects now that I am trying to photograph them as opposed to when I only wanted to kill them. :)

Beautiful shots. Your interesting lighting rig looks like it would compact and portable enough for field use.
