Are they moss reproduction structures ?

Post by Marek Mis »

I am wonder if these small structures on the moss leaf edge are the small parts of it to vegetative reproduction. I hope there is anybody who would like to make me sure. Thank you for attention :)

Mosses reproduce by spore capsules on stalks, so I don't think so. Is this part of a leaf or the surface of a growing point?

Are you sure this is a moss and not a liverwort or other thing?

Not sure at all but they could be propagules, gemmae at the leaf borders have been described in mosses.

It is part of a leaf. This plant did not have any stalk. It was very small flat plant on the tree trunk (couple milimeters) and its "leaves" were very small.
It could be some kind of liverwort, indeed. I'll try to photograph the whole plant (if I find it) on the tree and post it to the forum for further identification :)

Yes, it is a liverwort and the items along the leaf edge are foliar gemmae (asexual propagules). I suspect it may be Radula complanata, but can't be sure without seeing more of the subject. The big 'blobs' in the cells are oil bodies, unique to the liverworts. Lovely image :-)

Thank you very much for the identification and for additional informations :)

This looks like a super cool subject! Nice image! What magnification did you use for this?
