Tacky Labophot2 hand rest

Post by Diogenes »

The "leather effect"on the handrest on these microscopes can break down into a tacky mess over time. The base plastic moulding is actually coated with a softer material, and it's this stuff which causes the problem.
Take a tablespoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), mix to a paste with a little water and apply vigorously on a cloth.
Keep rubbing until all the darker layer is removed.
Rinse well, dry thoroughly, and polish up with T-cut.
See pic.

Interesting. It is that "tacky" base that made me stay away from those when I was first in the market for a scope.

But that is an improvement.

Thanks for that info.
I was able to clean up two of my Optiphots with isopropyl ? alcohol and elbow grease.
They turned out very nice.

I wiped my down with little paint thinner, and re-painted it with a dull brown, looks great!
