How to slow down micro subjects

I am not a microscopist, but did read once Rik where somebody added plastic wallpaper paste (Polycell in the UK) to the liquid to increase it's viscosity and slow the swimming subjects down so they did not cross the field of view so quickly. Bit like swimming through mud or molasses for them! I presume it would aid photographing them also?
