Micrasterias truncata in polarized light

Post by ralfwagner »

Hello,

here is video of a Micrasterias truncata in polarized light:

https://youtu.be/bibpkhdJxsU

Does anybody here know something about the nature of these little flickering yellow dots inside the plasma?

dazzling! quick internet search suggests maybe barium and or strontium sulfate crystals

Hello Houstontx,

thank you for that hint. A google search with "micrasterias" and "strontium sulfat" resulted in this pdf:

http://www.landesmuseum.at/pdf_frei_rem ... 3-0276.pdf

It is in German, but with an English abstract. Herein it is shown by X-ray analysis, that in Micrasterias denticulata these crystals are Bariumsulfat. So I am thinking, that this will be true for Micrasterias truncata, too.

Ralf,

I saw a similar pdf with x-ray crystallography research very interesting. I believe there is a similar effect maybe in protists with the same bio accumulation of oxalate crystals.
