Quekett Excursion to Basingstoke Canal/Brookwood Surrey
Yesterday was the annual excursion of the Quekett Microscopical Club to the Basingstoke Canal at Brookwood. Here is a link to some photos:

We were threatened with rain, but in fact the weather was excellent and sunny, allowing us to have a leisurely walk to do some botany, whilst also collecting water samples for microscopical examination. My wife and daughter came along too, and the pictures are a selection of the family's photos.

Though we lean upon the same balustrade, the colours of the mountain are different.

The excursion to the Basingstoke Canal has become an annual event for the Quekett Microscopical Club, and we were there again 2 days ago.
You can see a report on the Quekett website, with photographs of the canal, the members, their equipment and some of the specimens that we photographed with cameras and microscopes.

Members of the Quekett Microscopical Club will be visiting the Basingstoke Canal again on Saturday 16th July 2016, based in Brookwood Memorial Hall in Surrey (GU24 0AL, adjacent to 150 Connaught Road).
If you are free, please drop in to see us and our microscopes and cameras. There is free parking in the grounds of the Hall, which is a short walk from Brookwood Station.

Non-members are welcome. If you are free, please drop in to see us and our microscopes, cameras, computers, books and nets. There is free parking in the grounds of the Hall, and it is just a short walk from Brookwood Station.

elementary question
If possible, please post photos of how you harvest your specimens. I suspect that this is an unappreciated art. Thanks.
Crusty, that is a good idea.
I will be at Brookwood taking photographs for the report, so I will try to remember to take photos of the equipment.

Equipment etc.
As promised, a selection of images (I hope not too many - but needs must!) of various sampling equipment. I've kept it in this thread because that was where the question was asked, but happy if admin wish to move it. All images were taken on Basingstoke Canal at Brookwood in Surrey, UK, mostly yesterday but also at various Quekett Club excursions over the last few years. I was not the only one taking photos of collecting equipment yesterday, so there may be further contributions.
The well equipped collector!
Using a plankton net - fine net with detachable bottle. This concentrates the sample and the contents can be easily accessed.
Two types of plankton net - one with a handle, the other for dragging with a line, either from the bank or from a boat

Golf ball retriever with a sampling pot
Scraping the bottom with a pot held in a golf ball retriever. Can be used for scraping walls etc. too
A turkey baster is a very useful sampling tool. Also, another golf ball retriever with sample pot.
Weed drag on a line for casting into patches of weed. Remember to secure the line and don't throw yourself in!
