I bent to sniff my favourite rose.............

And it looks as though this poor guy was carrying a parasitic mite on his thorax. I haven't noticed a "hump" like this on this particular type of hoverfly before, and over the years, I've checked out a lot of hoverflies............

D810, Tamron 90mm macro, iso 1600, F22, camera flash.

Nice shot! Could be a normal Syrphus rubesii? Scutellum is quite pronounced.

Yes, you're correct.......I zoomed in a bit on the original shot and compared it with another SR, and it's clearly meant to be there!!
