Brown-and-yellow fruit chafer Pachnoda aemula

Post by perdu34 »

Another addition to my collection of Fruit Chafers, this time it's Pachnoda aemula.

Settings:
Canon 5Diii
Canon MP-E 65mm 1-5x (at 5x)
Canon Twin speedlites
Yonguno speedlites x2
Stackshot rail

ISO 50
f4.0
1/160sec
15um step size

12371 images in 52 stacks
Stacking:
Round 1 - 30 images Helicon B 10, 10
Round 2 - All previous stacks Helicon B 20, 2

This image took over three weeks to make (partly because I went away for work in the middle and re-shot half of the right side) and just under 4 days to stitch and photoshop.

When I was cleaning and pinning this chafer I was very excited to see that the black was actually a deep green. Unfortunately this must be a structural "colour" that only happens when the insect is wet.

Image

I think this is the same effect that happens with the blue in many other insects.

Wow that's a huge number of stacks & stitches, and lots of work as well.

The results are an absolutely beautiful image

What stitching program did you use to stitch the 52 sections together?

Hi Mike,

I use photoshop to do the stitching. For this image I stitched each of the six legs and the body separately. I then manually stitched those 7 parts together in a new file.
