Stomata - Pinus strobus

Image 1 - Four stomata from the needle (leaf) of the eastern white pine tree. The stomata guard cells and other features are not visible in the pine. The openings are not on the epidermal surface but under the white foam like patches. Leitz UO 50x objective. FOV approx. 250 microns. EPI illumination.

Image 2 - The paired row of stomata that run the length of the long fine needles of Pinus strobus. Leitz UO 22x objective. FOV approx. 0.6 mm. EPI illumination.

When I read that pine needles have stomata like the leaves of deciduous trees, I wanted to take a look. I was surprised to see that the stomata are covered up and show none of the details found on leaves. Pine needles are not shed every year and needles are designed not to shed water. This is probably part of the reason for the covering.
