Lichen morphology

Post by Ken Ramos »

In Cladonia cristatella, British Soldier lichens, these red pigmented structures are said to be apothecia but this image is that of a foliose lichen displaying a similar structure but on a much smaller scale. The approximate size of these red structures are around .75 mm as measured with a fine needled caliper using the dissecting microscope. Thing is, that I have found no reference of such occurring in or on foliose lichens as their apothecia is usually cup-shaped with a light tan to a deep brown hymenium. Suggestions?
