Polystichum munitum (Swordfern) sporangia

Post by Charles Krebs »

I saw this fern along a path yesterday and the sporangia were really "loaded". A few members here have posted incredible auto-fluorescence shots of similar subjects so I was anticipating quite a colorful show when I illuminated them with UV. Nothing! (well very little :() . Perhaps this effect is highly variable with different species or growing conditions. I may need to look at it again... I see Frank Fox used blue excitation, and Rogelio had quite long exposures, so perhaps it is simply very faint. In any event, I took three stacks with "regular" light. Still an interesting subject.

10X, 20X and 50X M Plan Fluorite Olympus .

Beautiful results! I have noticed the same. Sometimes things fluoresce and sometime not. I have very nice shoots of copepods shining bright in blue under UW-light. The next time, nothing. I have not figured out why.

Nice!

I do not see any trace of CA in your pictures. My Nikon infinity fluors have a little more CA than I hoped. The only Olympus lens that I have is a water dipping lens LUMplanFL 20x na 0.5. In my opinion that one does not suffer from to much CA. I would appreciate your opinion, maybe in another thread, about the quality of the Olympus M plan fluorite lenses.

Wonderful images as always Charles! Since seeing the amazing sporangia shots on this site, I can't pass a fern without turning over a few leaves to find some of my own to shoot. But to date, they've always been "past it" and just a tangled fluffy mess. No fair :(
