Olympus High Res Shot mode for photomicrography?

Post by kit1980 »

Do you think Olympus High Res Shot mode, where the camera combines several exposures with fractional pixel sensor shifts, useful for photomicrography? Any personal experience?

In particular I'm thinking about Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II camera's High Res Shot mode.

My (very limited!) testing with a Pen F on a microscope showed no discernible resolution increase with most subjects. This is almost certainly due to the relatively small effective apertures that you have on a microscope (diffraction). (If Ii recall correctly, Olympus does not even let you use use this method with apertures smaller than f8 when you have a MFT lens attached).

But I strongly suspect that it may, in certain cases, show a benefit with highly detailed subjects of a single color (such as a strong red), since it will also collect color information as it shifts. This could help avoid Bayer pattern resolution loss. I didn't test this on a microscope subject, but check out the red tail-light I posted in this thread:
