Overwintering moth

Post by NikonUser »

Several species of moths overwinter in the adult stage here in New Brunswick even though we often get some very cold weather. Perhaps they overwinter below the snow, much warmer there than above.

This Dot-and-Dash Swordgrass (Xylena curvimacula) was in my trap this am, April 24 2017.
It is very similar to the UK's Sword-grass (Xylena exsoleta) which also overwinters as an adult moth.

Quote – Holmes on ‘Entomology’
” I suppose you are an entomologist ? “
” Not quite so ambitious as that, sir. I should like to put my eyes on the individual entitled to that name.
No man can be truly called an entomologist,
sir; the subject is too vast for any single human intelligence to grasp.”
