My success rate on non-faulty ebay Mitties is 4 out of about 10.
Samples being
2,5,10,10,10,10,10,20,50,100x.
Edit - now 4 out of 11.
A dud 7.5x

Admin note: Forum member Crystalline continues the discussion of purchasing Mitutoyo lenses in Mitutoyo lenses: to e-bay or not to e-bay?. I've split it off into a thread in the "Equipment" section, as it will likely find a wider audience there.

Yeah, I was about to pull the trigger on 3 Mittys on eBay.
A 2x, 5x and 10x.
But now...I'm very hesitant, and have decided not to go through with it.
I'll just stick with a 2x or 5x to start with, brand new, and then, if I feel up to it, graduate to a 10x.
Saving money is a pain in the proverbial, but it's better to be certain that I'll have a good lens of known provenance.
And besides, I do not possess the appropriate testing equipment - that being a fully functional macro setup with stackshot/wemacro rail, tube lens/raynox, camera, etc.
I'll put the horse before the cart, so to speak

Agree with Pau. I had the 2X and didn't use it because the IQ was poor compared to the other solutions. The 5X using a Raynox 250 as a tube gives you 3.125X (125/200) with good IQ, which isn't 2X but useful for low magnifications.
I use a Nikon 105 F2.8 Macro with 68mm extensions (Kenko) for 1.95X, and 36mm for 1.5X.
Soon if I get some time I may try the 105mm as a tube for the Mitty 5X to see how the IQ is, this should give 2.625X.
Best,
Mike
