I just read about this and thought it would be of interest.
Daniel Kariko - assistant prof. of fine art photography at East Carolina U. has a series of photos called "Suburban Symbiosis" that are composites of SEM images with (I think) regular stacked photography of insects.

(If he's a member here & this is old news - sorry. I hadn't seen it - but they're neat photos).

It's not really clear how much of the lighting is careful studio work and how much is careful photoshop work, but the results are beautiful.
