I have been collecting rotifers for almost 50 years and posted an article with images and a movie of rotifers collected in the summer of 2020. The article includes some new information about rotifers and a list of references. In particular I show two colonial rotifers. Rotifers are just the right size for viewing with a microscope. There are 2149 species, but so far I have only photographed a few hundred different species.
Scientists recently discovered a substance made by rotifers (Rotaria rotaria - a Bdelloid rotifer) that can paralyze worms that cause schistosomiasis, a dangerous infection that affects 200 million people world wide - maybe this will stimulate more research into these fascinating organisms.
The article can be found on my web site: https://www.canadiannaturephotographer. ... sited.html

Re: Rotifers revisited
Schistosomiasis, never heard of it, much less being able to pronounce it, but its a wonder that I haven't had it. I always fancied my medical record as being required reading for epidemiology students. Especially having spent so many years in S.E. Asia. Interesting photographs and an interesting subject.

That would be my pronunciation attempt... unintentional a-word there. I can imagine a book of words like this!

I used to have the link but somewhere along the line I have deleted it but it was an online dictionary with nothing but words like this and how to pronounce them both as written text and verbally. I need to find that because it really came in handy.Macro_Cosmos wrote: ↑Sat Sep 05, 2020 6:01 amThey look fascinating, lovely images!
